Creative Spotlight: Jessica Augarde Photography

Jessica Augarde Photography
Bristol, UK

A fantastic photographer who's work takes a whole new look at the world around her with vivid and wonderful, purely breath taking images. We caught up with her for a few questions about her photography.

Is there anyone in your life who inspires your work?

I work with so many creative people on photoshoots, it’s difficult not to be inspired! I particularly enjoy working with my sister Poppy Augarde, who often models for me, and we can always come up with exciting concepts for shoots together – we have several in the works currently!

If you could be invisible for a day with your camera, where would you go, what would you do?

I would photograph Johnny Depp, because he is a beautiful human being!

Describe your photography style in 5 words?

Fantastical, bold, Feminine, elegant, vibrant.

What’s the worst thing that has ever happened on a shoot?

While shooting model Sky Valentine in a deserted field, we left my mum’s antique piano chair, which we had brought along as a prop, briefly unattended. We returned a few minutes later only to find pieces of the chair, it had been smashed to bits – my mum was not impressed!

How do you feel about all the controversy with high gloss fashion magazines photoshoping their models waistlines?

I’m in two minds on the matter. I’m very much in favour of healthy models, plus sized or skinny, and portraying them in a realistic manner is great. However as an artist I understand the photographers wanting an image to look its very best, and smoothing out any imperfections or lumps and bumps. I feel it also important for magazine readers to understand that these models do not always look the way they are photographed in real life.

Creative Spotlight: Heather White

Heather White, a fantastic aspiring photographer based in the UK who's photos are visually stunning and her portraits truly capture something unique. We caught up with the mind behind Crypton Photography to ask her a few short questions.

What has been your most memorable photo shoot?

My first photo shoot with Alice La vie is the most memorable for me. A model from Cornwall, who I never thought in a million years I would get the chance to meet! I loved her modelling work before I decided I wanted to become a photographer. I did not know she planned to do a photo shoot at a studio called Scarlet Door which is situated close by! As soon as I knew, I contacted the host/studio owner on how I can be a part. I paid a cheap price for an hour with Alice and used of all their lighting equipment. When the day came I was so worried! 1) It was my first time in a studio 2) I would be meeting on of my most favourite models! 3) I had no idea what to do. So I planned to wing it! I ended up producing crazy amazing images, one set which has been published.

Are you a Mac or PC user?

Uh... No brainer, PC!

Who would you love to work with, be it another photographer, model, MUA or stylist?

OH the list. Longest list of all lists. I want to work with so many people!

  • Lily Cole (Model , Fashion)
  • Ophelia overdose (Model, Alternative)
  • Nadia Stephens’s photography (I’m in talks and planning!)
  • Jade Thompson (Winner of Britain’s and Irelands next top model cycle 7)
  • Alice bizarre (MUA & Model)
  • Miss deadly red (Model, Alternative)
  • Charmaine Zsigo-Oliver (Model & Owner of Mushme Latex)

I won’t make the list longer but those are a short few!

What five words would your friend use to describe you?

Well I was speaking to my friends at college about this funny enough!

They said “Crazy, Creative, Independent, kind and worries too often!” a funny bizarre mix.

Have you had any formal photography training or are you self taught?

I’d love to say self taught. But I’ve had the helpful teaching of Shawn Bishop. The owner of Scarlet Door, I’m very thankful for everything he has done to help me and all of the experience he has been able to offer me. Without his help I would not be the photographer I am today!

Thank you for the interview Kim! Everyone will have to go on my page to keep updates for what I have planned for the future!

Artist Focus: Zena El Khalil

Zena El Khalil

Visual Artist, writer, activist

Lebanon

Having been born London, England, Zena El Khalil grew up in Nigeria and then attended high school in England. After high school she returned to her home country of Lebanon and earned an undergraduate degree from the American University in Beirut. Then in 2002 El Khalil attained a Masters of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York.
Zena El Khalil's work ranges from painting, installation, performance, mixed media, writing, video, and collage. She focuses mostly on highlighting the issues of violence and gender in Beirut, she creates her pieces using materials found in the city - everything from plastic flowers, glitter, photocopied images, strings of lights, plastic toy soldiers, toy AK-47s, beads, fabrics and in her work you will often see the colors pink, purple and gold used.. To quote the artist, “All spiritual. All holy. Every act we do or word we utter, we are absolutely responsible for. We are absolutely responsible for being alive. I am and I am grateful for, only being, a fragment in the cosmos of things... the great unbendable universe. The deeper I look into myself, the more I find that I am connected to something much greater. And this comforts me… knowing that everything I feel or make is a catalyst in someone else’s mind. And the more I let go to experience these beliefs, the closer I become to you. We are one, without being numerical. By painting and sculpting these images, I am fighting for life. I am fighting for your life. I am fighting for my life.”
She has held exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. She has had solo exhibitions in London, Munich, and Beirut.
Zena also holds and annual performance of a piece titled “The Pink Bride of Peace,” where she participates in the Beirut International Marathon wearing a big pink wedding dress. She uses this performance to raise awareness on issues in Lebanon such as animal rights, civil marriage, and to spread love, peace and positivity in a region that is volatile and unstable. The performance began in 2003 and has gone one every year since.

She is the co- founder, director and curator of Xanadu*; an "ungallery art space/collective". Xanadu* began in New York City as a not for profit organization dedicated to promoting emerging and under - represented artists. Currently, Xanadu* is based in Beirut with a small extension on New York City.
During the July War in Lebanon, El Khalil started beirutupdate from her apartment, a personal tale of the violence in Beirut that lasted for 33 days. The blog was quickly picked up by news stations such as CNN and the BBC with pieces being published in daily papers around the world.
In May 2008, El Khalil was invited by the Nobel Peace Center to participate in a discussion on freedom of expression on the internet.
In 2008 El Khalil also completed her first novel, Beirut, I Love You, published by Saqi Books which she has been working to produce a feature film.
Now she lives in Beirut with her Jack Russell Terrier, Tapi. She believes that listening to Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s music as a teenager helped her develop into the international rabble-rouser that she is today. Her daily mantra is Gandhi’s “be the change you wish to see in the world.”

In 2012 she was made a TED Fellow.

Great Ideas for taking pictures of kids:

There's nothing harder than trying to keep kids looking at the lens, they are forever getting disracted, so why not distract them in the right direction! Try these really simple ways you can make from things you most probably have lying around the house already.

Creative Spotlight: Kim Gammage

Kim Gammage
Photographer
Bangkok Thailand
Facebook

A photographer born and raised in Dubai, UAE, now living and working in Bangkok, Thailand, we catch up with Kim Gammage to find out more about her work.

How would you describe your work?

Well my artistic work tends to be quite dark, but most of my other photography is spontaneous and fun,  I enjoy capturing the moments that people aren't aware of, those priceless moments where you can really see what's going on. They say a picture is worth a thousand words but I only think that's true if it captures a moment in time that can never be repeated.

How long have you been taking photos?

I realized I loved taking photos at about five or six years old at a waterfall in Thailand, ever since then I've been building my experience and irritating the hell out of the people around me with all sorts of cameras.

So have you ever studied photography or are you self taught?

I am mostly self taught aside from a weekend course I took in Dubai that was an introduction to digital photography. I was the youngest one there, the only one without a DSLR and yet the one who already knew the most, I just didn't know what the actual names of all the buttons were.

Do you just take pictures of people or do you branch out?

My main focus tends to be people but I also have a love of botanical photography. I avoid landscapes, on occasion I shoot urban or street photos but it is mainly people.

What is your biggest photographic accomplishment?

That's a tough one. I have really big dreams so right now I don't feel like I've done much. I did always enjoy being known as "the girl with the camera" in Dubai at the local music gigs. Actually thinking about it probably being in the press pit at the Back to School Festival in Dubai a few years back was a pretty big deal, I always used to shoot the bands at the gigs in peoples back gardens but being in the press pit at a massive concert really was something else.
